Building Analyst (BA) Certifications

Training Requirements

The State of Michigan (SOM) requires prospective Building Analysts to take the following training:

  • MiTEC’s two-day Building Analyst Technician (BA-T) training and achieve the BA-T certification or within 180 days after beginning work in the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) if already BPI BAP certified.
  • MiTEC’s two-day Building Analyst Professional BA-P) training and achieve the BA-P certification or within 180 days after beginning work in the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) if already BPI BAP certified.
  • MiTEC’s Online Lead Safe Work training must be completed within 180 days of start date
  • MiTEC’s Online Health and Safety training must be completed within 180 days of start date
  • OSHA 10 training/certification must be completed within 180 days of start date.  See OSHA Training Institute Education Centers | Occupational Safety and Health Administration
  • LRRP training/certification must be completed within 180 days of start date.  See Lead Workforce (michigan.gov)

Certifications

  • BSP Certificate

The Building Science Principles certificate is a prerequisite to take the BA-T class.

  • BPI BA-T Certification

To apply for the BPI BAT certification, the candidate must meet BPI prerequisites to become certified or take this exam.

The certified Building Analyst Technician will be required to renew their certification every three years.

  • BPI BAP Certification

The BA-T Certification is a prerequisite to take the BA-P class.

To apply for the BPI BAP certification, the candidate must meet BPI prerequisites to become certified or take this exam.

The certified Building Analyst Professional will be required to renew their certification every three years.

Renewal/Recertification

Training

BAs must complete any IREC approved EA/QCI JTA comprehensive training from list below within 3 years of achieving certification.

  • Building Analyst Technician

  • Mechanical Systems for Auditors
  • NEAT/MHEA Data Entry
  • CAZ Pressure Diagnostics
  • ASHRAE 62.2-2016
  • Venting & Combustion Air

BPI Requirements

  • BA-P’s must have accumulated a minimum of 30 qualifying continuing education units (CEUs) over three years of certification. 

Energy Auditor Certifications

Training Requirements

The State of Michigan (SOM) requires prospective Energy Auditors to take the following training:

  • MiTEC’s five-day Energy Auditor training before achieving certification or within 180 days after beginning work in the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) if already BPI EA certified.
  • MiTEC’s Online Lead Safe Work training must be completed within 180 days of start date
  • MiTEC’s Online Health and Safety training must be completed within 180 days of start date

Certifications

SOM EA Certification

Once the prospective EA completes the five-day EA training, they are eligible to take the State of Michigan (SOM) EA certification exam. The SOM EA certification consists of a field exam. To pass, the individual must achieve 82% or higher and must pass all gated items. If an individual first opts to hold the SOM EA, that certification is valid for up to 18 months after the certification date. After that time, the individual must obtain the BPI EA certification to continue performing energy audits.

BPI EA Certification

The certified Energy Auditor will be required to renew their certification every three years.


Renewal/Recertification

EAs must complete any IREC approved EA/QCI JTA comprehensive training from list below within 3 years of achieving certification.

BPI Requirements

  • Candidates must have accumulated a minimum of 24 qualifying continuing education units (CEUs) over three years of certification. 

NOTE: If this is not met, they will be required to retake the EA Online Exam.

  • When the minimum CEU requirement is met, the candidate must successfully complete the field exam.

Quality Control Inspector Certification

Training Requirements

The State of Michigan (SOM) requires prospective Quality Control Inspectors (QCI) to take the following training:  

  • MiTEC’s QCI training before achieving certification or within 180 days after beginning work in the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) if already BPI QCI certified.
  • MiTEC’s Online Lead Safe Work training must be completed within 180 days of start date
  • MiTEC’s Online Health and Safety training must be completed within 180 days of start date

Certifications

BPI QCI Certification

To work in the QCI JTA, an individual must, at minimum, hold:

  • BPI EA certification
  • BPI QCI certification

QCI Prerequisites

BPI Requirements

To be eligible for certification renewal, BPI-certified Quality Control Inspectors must hold an active BPI Energy Auditor certification at the time of renewal.

  • May accumulate a minimum of six (6) qualifying continuing education units (CEUs) over the three (3) years of certification to bypass the online exam, OR
  • Successfully challenge the online exam that is current at the time of renewal.
